The 30 Rules for Reading a House
1. Feng Shui reading in countryside and city are different
The Qi in countryside is scattered. It is good to build a house with mountain and water around. The Qi in city areas, however, is condensed. Even there is no true water near a house, the nearby buildings of different tallness and the roads of different widths and bending create the effect of “mountain” and “water”. In general, those which are depressed, low, wide, winding and in motion are referred to as “water” symbolically, whereas those being elevated, tall, narrow and straight are “mountain”.
2. Flying stars
The Feng Shui of a house is primarily determined by the location of the timely, reigning Star. The distribution of various Mountain Stars, Water (Facing) Stars and the influence from the time-related Stars are also important. Whether a house has a timely Water (Facing) Star at the main door significantly determines its auspiciousness. The beneficial effect of the timely Star is further enhanced by the presence of water with light reflections and to a lesser extent, a traffic junction outside the door.
3. House direction or door direction as the orientation
A house may have its door open at a different direction from its facing direction. When reviewing such a house for the first time, it may be difficult to decide which direction should be taken as the orientation of the house in formulating the Flying Star Chart. In that case, one has to formulate two charts based on either direction, and to verify which configuration matches with the events in reality.
4. The external environment
When reading the Feng Shui of a house, first examine whether the mountains, watercourses and other physical formations are at appropriate locations in relation to the Mountain and Water Stars in the Star Chart configuration . Then review the nature of Flying Stars that are present on the path which people move about, and the Stars at the locations affected by the presence of the ridge of a neighbouring house, a honorific arch or portal, flag pole or tomb in the nearby environment.
5. Door opens at the side of a house
The auspiciousness of a house is determined by the Qi that is received by the main entrance which is traditionally at the front of the house. However if the entrance is opened at its side, it will receive Qi from a direction different from that of the house. In this case, it is necessary to consider the configurations of two Flying Star Charts derived from the door direction and the house direction respectively.
6. The size of door relative to the house
A house should have an entrance that is of appropriate size in relation to itself. It is inauspicious to have a small door opening for a large house. However it is still acceptable if both the house and the door are facing a timely Star.
7. To construct a new door opening at a auspicious location
When one wishes to construct a new door opening for an old house, the selection of a more auspicious location is based on the Flying Star Chart formulated with the time Period at which the house is built. For example, when a Period 1 house with Ren sitting Bing facing orientation is now in Period 3, the current timely Water Star 3 is located at the Zhen palace. Therefore, constructing a door opening at the Zia Mountain position of Zhen palace will receive the beneficial Qi there and improve the auspiciousness of the house.
8. After constructing a new door for a house
If the original entrance is concealed or permanently closed after a new door is constructed for the house, a new Flying Star Chart based on the direction of the new door has to be formulated.
9. To open a side door
When the pathway to the main door of a house is obstructed, and a side door is opened for easier access, the original Star
Chart is still applicable.
10. The door with a timely Star
It is auspicious to have water or traffic outside the entrance which has a timely Star. However if the door is constructed at a level higher than the house foundation, the entry of auspicious Qi into house will be hindered, unless the door is at a level lower than the street elevation.
11. Dark areas
Dark areas without sunlight or light inside a house are inauspicious locations. They may be haunted if Star 2 or 5 is also present there.
12. Placement of the stove
The stove in a house can be set on any location, no matter there is a timely Star or not. But placement on an auspicious sector should be avoided. In fact, the direction of the fuel opening of stove is a more important than its sitting or facing direction.
The stove belongs to Fire in Five Element. When its fuel opening faces Star 1, it is considered as “Fire and Water are complementary to each other” and it is auspicious. When it faces Star 3 or 4, it is considered as Wood nurtures Fire. It is also auspicious. When it faces Star 8, it is Fire generating Earth. It is moderately auspicious. When it faces Star 9, it is less auspicious because the Fire Element is too strong. Facing the Star 6 or 7 should be avoided because Fire hinders Metal. It is even worse if it faces Star 2 or 5 as it will activate illness or disaster to happen. Furthermore, the stove should not be placed in a sector where the Star 9 is located because it will be overwhelmed by Fire Qi and may activate a fire disaster. These Flying Stars are referred to the Water Stars in the Chart formulated when the house is built and not when the stove is erected.
13. Placement for the toilet
It is inadvisable to build the toilet in a location where there is Star 2 or 5 because it may precipitate illnesses or disasters. It is better to build it in locations with untimely stars.
14. Building extension to the house in a succeeding time period
When an extension of the house is built, the Flying Star Chart will be the same as before if the same entrance is used for the extension even though it is built in a different Period. However if the new extension has its own entrance, then a second Flying Star Chart based on the new Period and its direction should be formulated. Furthermore, if the original entrance is closed after the new extension is built and the new entrance is used for the whole house, then the new Flying Star Chart will replace the original Chart for the whole house.
15. Splitting the house into two
When a house is divided into two portions, its original Flying Star Chart remains unchanged and is applicable to both subunits. Whether the subunit is auspicious or not depends on its location in the house and the Star falling on its door.
16. Multiple households in a house
When there are several household units in a house, the Feng Shui of each household depends on the Star located at its door. It is also affected by the Stars present along the path leading to the unit from the main entrance.
17. Creating a room inside a house
When a room with its own entrance is built inside a house, a Flying Star Chart for itself should be formulated based the direction of its door. However if the room is in communication with the house proper, the Star Chart for the whole house is still applicable.
18. Imprisonment
The Water Star in the centre of a Flying Star Chart signifies the Period of imprisonment. However if there is a courtyard or open space in the centre of the house, the imprisoned Star is released. In addition, the presence of water with light refection in front of the facing direction of the house can also resolve imprisonment.
19. Shop
When judging the Feng Shui of a shop, it is most important to note the direction of the front entrance, followed by the cashier’s counter and then the religious altar. When all these are at the location with timely Flying Stars, it is most auspicious.
20. Elevations in the auspicious location
It is auspicious to have a tall object supporting the location where a timely Mountain Star is present. The effect is increased if the Star is also nurtured or supported by the Annual or Monthly Stars there. The reverse is also true.
21. Blocked by bamboos
It is inauspicious to have bushes and tree blocking the location where the timely Star resides. However, bamboos are acceptable as they can still allow the air to circulate through. On the other hand, it is inauspicious to have the site of the untimely Stars blocked by either trees or bamboos.
22. Untimely Star 1
When the location of an untimely Star 1 is confronted with unpleasant-looking objects or pointed edges, it may result in water-related illnesses.
23. Auspiciousness in wealth, fertility and fame
The auspiciousness in wealth is determined by whether the location of the timely Water (Facing) Stars is supported by “water” in the external environment, and if the timely Annual Star is also present. Fame is determined by whether the directional location of Water (Facing) Star 1 or 4 is supported by mountains or merging rivers in the external environment, and the presence of an appropriate Annual Star. The auspiciousness in fertility and descendant is determined by the Mountain Star at the sitting position and the timely Mountain Star.
24. Untimely Star at the entrance
When the entrance of house is located at where an untimely Star is present, its effect is more detrimental if the same untimely Annual Star also arrives there. It may result in harm to children. Bad luck can still happen even if a timely Annual Star is there.
25. Evil spirits
Clustering of untimely Stars in an area may result in ill effects. This is boosted if an unfavourable object such as a high mountain, the ridge of the roof or decaying tree, is also present in the external environment at that directional location. The occupants may experience strange happenings or encountering spirits with arrival of an inauspicious Annual, Monthly or Daily Stars.
26. Pathway of Qi flow
The road is where Qi travels. It brings Qi, auspicious or not, into the house. A road that is further away from the house has less effect, yet it is inauspicious to have a straight road pointing directly to the house. The flow of Qi in the passage inside the house has more significant effect. It is beneficial if there are timely Water (Facing) Stars are present along the passage.
27. Well
The well is the source for water supply. It is beneficial to have it located at areas with a timely Water (Facing) Star. It supports the Qi for academic achievement. However if it is present at the site of an untimely Star, it may create problems.
28. Pagoda
A pagoda or a tower house is good in supporting academic achievement when it is located in the sector where the Stars 1 and 4 meet, or Stars 1 and 6 meet. However if the pagoda is present in the sector with Stars 7 and 9 or Stars 2 and 5 combination, it may cause bad luck or disaster.
29. Bridge
A bridge or flyover will support timely Water (Facing) Stars. However it can have evil effect if it is located at the site of an untimely Star. A stone or concrete bridge has more prominent effect than a wooden bridge.
30. curving or pointed landscape
An object or building that has a sharp and pointed corner or edge towards a house is unfavourable. However, one that is curving around and embracing it is beneficial.
