Yin-Yang Ling Zheng

Ying Yang Ling Zheng provides a principle for auspicious positioning of a house with reference to the direction of mountain and water in the external environment in different Periods.

The Zheng position and Ling position are generally in a direction opposite to each other. The Zheng position is referred to as the Yang-favouring or mountain-favouring direction, while the Ling position is referred to as the Yin-favouring or water-favouring direction. It is auspicious if a house can have high land or mountain located in its Zheng direction and, at the same time has low land or water in the Ling direction.

The location for Zheng and Ling positions vary in different Periods. The Zheng position of a Period is the direction indicated by the palace in the Luo Shu Chart that has the Period numeral. Diagonally opposite to it is the Ling position. For example, the Zheng position of Period 3 is in the Zhen palace where the numeral 3 resides in the Luo Shu Chart. It represents the east direction, so it is auspicious to have a mountain in the east of a house. The Ling position is then in the Dui palace which is the palace in Luo Shu Chart opposite to the Zheng position. Here is where the numeral 7 resides, and it is good to have water in the west of the house.

The location of Zheng and Ling positions in different Periods are shown in the table below. The numerals in the Zheng and Ling positions in the table are the numerals in the Luo Shu Chart.

As numeral 5 is located at the centre of the Luo Shu Chart, the determination for the Zheng and Ling positions of Period 5 is different from the others. In the first 10 years of Period 5, it abandons itself to the Kun sector. The Zheng position is located at the Sun palace and the Ling position is at the Gen palace. In the second 10 years of Period 5, it abandons itself to the Gen sector. The Zheng position is at the Qian palace and the Ling position is at the Kun palace.

Apart from the Ling position, there are also other water-favouring directions: the Shining (Zhao) position and the Secondary Ling (Ji Zhao) positions. However, these are of secondary importance in determining auspiciousness. In general, the locations of the water-favouring direction in various Periods are reflected by the initiating and concluding numbers in the Former Heaven River Chart. The overall water-favouring directions in the Periods 1 to 4 are located at palaces resided by 6, 7, 8, and 9, while those in Periods 6 to 9 are located at palaces resided by 1, 2, 3, and 4.

The Shining (Zhao) position of a period is indicated by the palace that has the numeral that would combine with the numeral of the Zheng position in Luo Shu Chart. Other than the Ling Position and the Shining (Zhao) position, the rest of the water-favouring positions are referred to as the Secondary Ling positions.

As Period 5 abandons itself to the inter-cardinal positions of the eight palaces, the determination for the Shining position and Secondary Ling positions is different. In the first 10 years of Period 5, the Shining position is at the direction of Wu and Ding Mountains, and that in the second 10 years is at the direction of Ji and Gui Mountains.

Apart from Yin Yang Ling Zheng, it is also important for the positions of the timely Stars to match with the physical formation of the external environment. If both the Yin Yang Ling Zheng and the timely Stars can match well with the mountain and water formation, auspiciousness of a greater extent can be achieved.
