五黃為皇極至尊，亦即戊土己土，蓋因萬物生於土，五黃為萬物之母也。五黃因向首陰陽有所謂順飛逆飛，亦因而產生不同之局面，南轅北轍。入中逆飛者，全局跟元旦盤合十，多出吉局。

例：酉山卯向七運，5入中逆飛，成七運旺山旺向

反之，五入中順飛者，跟元旦盤字字相同，犯全局伏吟，多為凶局。

運上山下水

五黃入中各為皇極居臨正位，至大至尊，有逢囚不囚之功。若飛臨外宮名曰廉貞，不論生或剋，到處成凶。故宜靜不宜動，動則招殃。一至九運，五黃寄於外宮，其理為易之體及用。以五運元旦盤為體，其他各元運為用。

例：一運

乾坤2、7合，艮巽4、9合，兌震3、8合，而離坎5、6不能合，然5為1之寄宮，才可離坎1、6合。

所以離宮之5為體，一為用也，故一六才可合，此為萬物土中生，萬物土中死也。

Star Five

Star 5 is also known as Five Yellow. It occupies the centre of the Luo Shu Chart. It is formed by the Qi from the Celestial Stems Wu and Ji and belongs to Earth in Five Element. Five Yellow is considered to be the Ultimate Supreme because it can nourish all matters in the universe.

When Star 5 is in the central grid of the geometric chart, its effect on the configuration is governed by the Yin Yang nature of the Star in the Facing Palace, as this determines the sequence of arrangement of the Stars. With Star 5 in the central grid and the other Stars distributed in a reverse order, all the Stars will have a “Combination of 10 in all Palaces” configuration with the Luo Shu Chart. It is generally an auspicious configuration. However, when the Stars are arranged in a forward sequence, the configuration will have a “Duplication of Stars in all Palaces” pattern with the Luo Shu Chart. It is generally inauspicious.

For example, in the Period 4 Chen sitting Xu facing configuration, Stars 5 enters the central grid and the other Stars are arranged in a reverse order. There is Duplication of Stars in the Front Palace and it is auspicious.

For example, in the Period 2 Shen sitting Yin facing configuration, Star 5 enters the centre and the other Stars are arranged in a forward progression. So it is a “Duplication of Stars in all Palaces” configuration. In Period 2, it is also a “Facing Star to the Back and Mountain Star to the Front” configuration.

Star 5 is the Ultimate Supreme when it occupies its designated area in the centre of the geometric chart. It has the power to release any imprisoned Stars. However, when it is at the peripheral Palaces, it becomes an evil Star. No matter whether it is nurtured or conquered, it is hostile and destructive. Therefore, it is undesirable to disturb or agitate the location where Five Yellow is located. Otherwise, it may bring about misadventures and disaster.

Star 5 occupies different positions of the geometric chart in different Periods. In Period 5, it is in the centre. It is the prototype configuration and is used as a reference for the configurations of other Periods.

For example, in Period 1, the configuration is shown in the diagram below.

Stars 2 and 7 in the Qian and Kun Palaces are in harmonious union. Stars 4 and 9 in the Gen and Sun Palaces are in harmonious union. Stars 3 and 8 in the Dui and Zhen Palaces are in harmonious union. Stars 5 and 6 in the Li and Kan Palaces are not in union. However, Star 1 can attach itself to Star 5, then the Stars in Li and Kan become Star 1 and 6 respectively and they are in harmonious union. Therefore, Star 5 may turn into Star 1, and form harmonious union with Star 6. Hence, all matters evolve from the Earth Element, and they also evolve to become Earth.

The also applies to the configurations in the other Periods, except Period 5. In Period 5, Star 5 is in the centre of the geometric chart. In the former 10 years, it is attached to Star 2 and in the latter 10 years, it is attached to Star 8.
