The Flying Stars in Xuan Kong Feng Shui are named by the numerals as Stars 1 to 9. Each of the nine Stars has its own Five-element characteristics and various symbolic representations. The determination of Feng Shui relies on interpreting their symbolic properties of these Stars in various palaces. The expression of their attributes is also affected by the nature of other Stars present in the same palace.

Familial relation : Middle son or Middle-aged man 
Attributes when timely : Good for academic achievements, Fame, Likely to have a clever boy.
Attributes when untimely : Will harm the wife, Blindness, Die young, Wandering and do not have a fixed residence

Flying Star 2
Five-element : Earth
Familial relation : Mother, Wife or Old lady
Attributes when timely : Owning a lot of land and property, Fertility, Bad in scholastic or academic achievement, Good in military achievement, The wife is dominating, Conspiracy, Being mean

Flying Star 3
Five-element : Wood
Familial relation : Eldest son
Attributes when timely : Good in financial and career achievement, Fame, Establishing a business, Good for the eldest son’s family
Attributes when untimely: Insane, Asthma or crippling disease, Will harm the wife, Gossip and legal dispute

Flying Star 4: 
Five-element : Wood
Familial relation : Eldest daughter
Attributes when timely : Have fame and achievement in literature and academia, Pretty girl, Get married to a noble family
Attributes when untimely : Insane, Asthma, Suicide by hanging, Improper romance in woman, Indulgence in sex and alcohol in man, Wandering in foreign countries 

Flying Star 5
Five-element : Earth
Generally inauspicious, Better if the area resided by this tar is kept still and not in motion, When coexists with the Annual Star 5, there will be illness, fatality or disaster, Coma and retarded, Legal dispute and Improper sex.

Attributes when untimely : Will harm the wife, Loneliness, Becoming a widow

Flying Star 9

Five-element : Fire

Personal relation : Middle daughter, Middle-aged woman

Attributes when timely : Good for work in literature and academia, Gaining fame suddenly, Good for the middle member of the family, Rapid rise and fall in career

Attributes when untimely : Vomit out blood, Insane, Eye disease, Complicated childbirth, Fire accident, Getting trouble from the officials

Each Flying Star has its own nature in Five Element, being Wood, Metal, Water, Fire or Earth. When two Elements are encountered in a palace, they interact with each other, either in form of generating and nurturing or conquering. Their interactions are generally expressed in terms of the productive and destructive cycles in the diagrams below.

When an unfavourable Flying Star is dominating, one can apply an object with a Five Element that it generates in the productive cycle in order to reduce or exhaust its strength. It is inadvisable to conquer it. 

When two Stars having the same property in Five Element are present in a palace, they will dominate and become an evil Qi. When the Earth (Star 2 or 5) is dominating, it is inauspicious. In this case, objects with Metal nature in Five Element can be used to reduce the effect of the dominating Earth Qi, and it is inappropriate to use Wood to conquer the Earth. When the Metal (Star 6 or 7) is dominating, objects of Water nature can be used to reduce the effect of Metal. It is inappropriate to use Fire to conquer Metal. When Wood (Star 3 or 4) is dominating, objects of Fire nature can be used to reduce the effect of Wood. It is inappropriate to use Metal to conquer it.

The reductive cycle

The attribute of a Flying Star is also determined by its phase, whether it is timely or not, in the time cycle. Time is an important factor. It is divided into cycles of 9 Periods, from Period 1 to 9. Each Period has 20 years. A Star is in its Boom phase when it is at its reigning Period. For example, Flying Star 8 is its Boom phase in Period 8, from 2004 to 2023. After that, it will be succeeded by Star 9. During Period 8, the Flying Star 9 is in its Breeding phase, and both Stars 8 and 9 are timely Stars in Period 8. On the other hand, the Boom Star in the preceding Period, Flying Star 7 is now in its Retreating phase. Flying Star 6 is in the Failing phase and the others are Dead or Degrading. All these are untimely stars.
